Recap from TJ Hawke:
Lots of kicking and striking to start. Then they both started going for submission attempts. They did stereo kipups, and then Ki just kicked out Dragon’s thigh. That was awesome. More kicking and submission attempts. Dragon got a nearfall with a La Magistral Cradle. Dragon sent him to the floor with a headscissors. Dragon went for a suicide dive, but Ki blocked the attempt with a leaping kick. That was awesome. Back in the ring, Ki hit a brutal sounding Buzzsaw kick: 1…2…NO! More striking. Dragon hit a nice spinning sole butt. This match needs Excalibur on commentary. The guys doing it are clowns. They traded more submissions. Dragon sent him to the floor and hit a tope con hello. Back in the ring, Dragon hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. Low Ki trapped Dragon in the Tree of Joey Lawrence, while also locking in a Dragon Sleeper. TIDAL CRUSH! KOPPOU KICK! Dragon went to the floor, but Ki then hit a forearm suicida. Ki went for a Phoenix Splash, but Dragon avoided it and killed Ki with a lariat and a springboard spinning heel kick: 1…2…NO! SUPER DRAGON HIT A PHOENIX SPLASH: 1…2…NO! Ki avoided a Psycho Driver, and Ki then hit a KI KRUSHER 2000! Somehow that wasn’t the finish. They went to opposite turnbuckles and then dove at each other. What the fuck??? That was kind of awesome in an “only in pro wrestling” kind of way. Dragon avoided a Ki Krusher and Ki avoided a Psycho Driver. They started striking each other until the bell rang. Time limit draw. Crowd wants five more minutes. They didn’t get it.
This was a surreal match. Low Ki was a completely different performer back in 2001. Some would say his style was less mature, but I would argue he was much more fun and entertaining. Super Dragon was in great shape, and he did some stuff that I had never seen from him before. I highly recommend that you watch this match.
Match Rating: ***1/2
Thoughts from Lee Goodfellow:
Low Ki’s strikes and innovative offence from both men highlighted this match, which reached total insanity with that crazy flying double lariat spot. The draw finish would have been cool had the bell not rang before the double knockout, that took away from what had been a very entertaining match. Also, I approve of the yellow tape that MPW used instead of a crowd barrier.
