Sean Waltman vs. Raven vs. Abyss vs. AJ Styles vs. Monty Brown from TNA’s Slammiversary 2005

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Styles was champion going into the match.  Waltman immediately took down Raven with a plancha off the cage.  Brown then hit Raven with the POUNCE: 1…2…3!  Brown can now hang the belt to win the match. Worst rules ever.  Raven is also in the penalty box for two minutes. WORST RULES! Styles wiped out Abyss with a tope con hello.  Brown pinned Waltman after a powerbomb, so Waltman had to go to the penalty box.  Brown killed AJ with the POUNCE! This has mostly been the Monty Brown show, which is OK with me.  Raven pinned Styles on the floor, so now Raven can hang the belt up. Yep, it’s also Falls Count Anywhere.  Waltman was let out of the cage and used a steel trash can to do some damage until Abyss kicked the can into Waltman’s face.  Abyss pinned Brown with the Black Hole Slam: 1…2…3! Why on earth would Monty Brown be pinned ever? In any match?  Abyss can now hang up the belt to win the match.  Styles had Raven pinned with the Styles Class, but Abyss broke up the pin.  Waltman whacked Abyss with a chair and placed him on a table on the floor. Style then did a SPIRAL TAP from the turnbuckle through the table on the floor: 1…2…3! WHAT THE FUCK! AJ be crazy.  In a total TNA spot, AJ was climbing the ladder, but he dropped the belt. Waltman handed AJ the belt, as if he was going to help for no reason. AJ fell for it and got low blowed. Stupid babyface.  Waltman then gave him an X-Factor off the ladder.  Raven used a staple gun on Waltman’s head. Waltman then used the staple gun on Raven’s balls. And then Abyss’s balls.  This match.  AJ and Waltman were climbing the ladder, but Abyss knocked the ladder over and they fell to the floor.  AJ fell through a table, but the director missed it.  Brown POUNCED Abyss through a table.  Raven gave Brown the Raven Effect!  Raven hung the belt up, and he is the new NWA World Champion.

As far as trainwrecks go, this was pretty entertaining.  There was some horrible stuff (the rules. AJ being a dumbass), but that didn’t make the match unbearable or anything close to that.  Apparently Raven winning the belt was really bizarre at the time, because it came out of nowhere despite his chase for the title being a big deal at one point. Sounds like something TNA would do.

Match Rating: ***1/4

About TJ Hawke

TJ was a fan of wrestling as a kid (starting around 1999), and his first concrete wrestling memory is some kid bringing Hulk Hogan his old yellow and red gear backstage during an episode of Nitro. Hogan needed the gear to defeat Kevin Nash in a title vs. career match at the next WCW PPV. Nash lost the match and his career, which sadly resulted in the world losing out on seeing Kevin Nash matches for the last 13 years. Like almost all young kids, TJ’s interest in wrestling fluctuated over the years until an episode of Raw on July 3, 2006. TJ was curious and excited to see his beloved RVD show up with the WWE Title belt and what he thought was the revitalized European title. TJ decided he must turn to the the internet to figure out what was going on. Almost 6 years later, TJ is still searching the internet every day to find out what is going on in wrestling. Now though, he writes for the pop culture site (411mania.com), has his own blog (The Best of Chikara), and is the creator of the very site you are reading now.
