Samoa Joe & Jay Lethal vs. Generation Next (Austin Aries & Roderick Strong) from ROH’s A Night of Tribute 2005

Part 1

Part 2

Recap from TJ Hawke:

The winners got a shot at the ROH World Tag Championships.  Lenny Leonard and Dave Prazak did a great job of explaining all the major storylines and character motivations that were present at the time.  Not much happened early on. Gen Next isolated Lethal, and they worked him over for a while.  Lethal was eventually able to hit Aries with a spinebuster. Joe tagged in and ran through Aries.  Joe and Lethal worked over Aries for a while.  Aries tagged out to Roddy, and Roddy then ran through Joe and Lethal.  This match has a weird face vs. face dynamic. Neither team is working in a particularly exciting fashion.  Aries and Roddy hit Joe with a crucifix bomb/Sick Kick combo. Roddy killed Lethal with some backbreakers.  Aries then hit Lethal with the frog splash: 1…2…3!

The frog splash was used because the show was a tribute to Eddie Guerrero, who had recently passed away. I found this match to be rather dull quite frankly. They tried doing some subtle stuff, but the match never really clicked with me.  The better team won at least, and this win set up their title victory at Final Battle 2005.

Match Rating: **3/4

About TJ Hawke

TJ was a fan of wrestling as a kid (starting around 1999), and his first concrete wrestling memory is some kid bringing Hulk Hogan his old yellow and red gear backstage during an episode of Nitro. Hogan needed the gear to defeat Kevin Nash in a title vs. career match at the next WCW PPV. Nash lost the match and his career, which sadly resulted in the world losing out on seeing Kevin Nash matches for the last 13 years. Like almost all young kids, TJ’s interest in wrestling fluctuated over the years until an episode of Raw on July 3, 2006. TJ was curious and excited to see his beloved RVD show up with the WWE Title belt and what he thought was the revitalized European title. TJ decided he must turn to the the internet to figure out what was going on. Almost 6 years later, TJ is still searching the internet every day to find out what is going on in wrestling. Now though, he writes for the pop culture site (411mania.com), has his own blog (The Best of Chikara), and is the creator of the very site you are reading now.
