Recap from TJ Hawke:

Gresham has some success in 2011 as Hieracon in Chikara’s Osirian Portal stable, but his singles matches (after Amasis got injured) left a lot to be desired.

A lot of matwork at the beginning of the match.  Angel managed to gain control, but Gresham escaped for a moment only to be caught with a powerslam.  They got back to their feet and Gresham got the advantage after a nice sounding kick to the arm.  Gresham then went to work on Angel’s arm.  Angel escaped and did a terribly convoluted flip sequence: he went for a rolling moonsault, but he was out of position; Gresham hot his knees up and Angel locked in a cloverleaf (that was not a fluid sequence).  Angel went for another powerslam, but Gresham reversed it into a Crippler Crossface (on the injured arm). Angel eventually made the ropes. They started to strike it out.  Gresham hit a pair of Germans, but Angel came right back with a Wheelbarrow German.  Gresham threw some more strikes, but Angel hit an exploder for a nearfall.  Angel went to the top rope, but Gresham hit a Sick Kick.  Gresham hit a superplex but on the landing, Angel got a small package to the get the win out of nowhere.

This match had some sound psychology but the execution was lacking at certain points.  I think the match would have worked better if Gresham worked over the arm more, and then with Angel having a more pronounced comeback.  Ultimately, the lack of investment from the crowd is the big thing holding this back.  Still, Angel is one of the best prospects in independent wrestling, and Gresham deserves more opportunities like this where he can be himself.  I hope to see a rematch.

Match Rating: **1/2

About TJ Hawke

TJ was a fan of wrestling as a kid (starting around 1999), and his first concrete wrestling memory is some kid bringing Hulk Hogan his old yellow and red gear backstage during an episode of Nitro. Hogan needed the gear to defeat Kevin Nash in a title vs. career match at the next WCW PPV. Nash lost the match and his career, which sadly resulted in the world losing out on seeing Kevin Nash matches for the last 13 years. Like almost all young kids, TJ’s interest in wrestling fluctuated over the years until an episode of Raw on July 3, 2006. TJ was curious and excited to see his beloved RVD show up with the WWE Title belt and what he thought was the revitalized European title. TJ decided he must turn to the the internet to figure out what was going on. Almost 6 years later, TJ is still searching the internet every day to find out what is going on in wrestling. Now though, he writes for the pop culture site (411mania.com), has his own blog (The Best of Chikara), and is the creator of the very site you are reading now.
