Recap from TJ Hawke:

Phoenix hit a dropkick early, and Devitt fell to the floor.  Phoenix then hit a somersault plancha, a la Devitt.  Back in the ring, Devitt hit a running knee to the back and sent Phoenix to the floor.  Devitt was in control after that.  Phoenix got a couple of hope spots, but Devitt was mostly in control for a while.  Phoenix finally hit a leg lariat to take down Devitt.  They traded some stikes.  Phoenix hit a running lariat for a nearfall.  Devitt came back with a snap superplex: 1…2…NO!  Phoenix avoided the Blood Sunday and hit a spike DDT: 1…2…NO!  Phoenix went for a Superfly splash, but Devitt avoided it.  Devitt hit a Ghetto Stomp to the back of Phoenix: 1…2…NO!  Devitt called for Randy Orton’s running punt, but Phoenix avoided it and hit a Japanese Stranglehold Backstabber: 1…2…NO!.  Devitt came back with a Pele kick and then another Ghetto Stomp.  Devitt followed it up with a Bloody Sunday: 1…2…3

This was a fun little match, and I think it was the first Devitt match I’ve seen that didn’t take place in Japan.  You can really tell how great of shape Devitt is in, because this match was worked at a fairly brisk pace, but he looked like he didn’t even break a sweat.  I hope to see more Phoenix matches going forward, as he seems to have potential.

Match Rating: ***

About TJ Hawke

TJ was a fan of wrestling as a kid (starting around 1999), and his first concrete wrestling memory is some kid bringing Hulk Hogan his old yellow and red gear backstage during an episode of Nitro. Hogan needed the gear to defeat Kevin Nash in a title vs. career match at the next WCW PPV. Nash lost the match and his career, which sadly resulted in the world losing out on seeing Kevin Nash matches for the last 13 years. Like almost all young kids, TJ’s interest in wrestling fluctuated over the years until an episode of Raw on July 3, 2006. TJ was curious and excited to see his beloved RVD show up with the WWE Title belt and what he thought was the revitalized European title. TJ decided he must turn to the the internet to figure out what was going on. Almost 6 years later, TJ is still searching the internet every day to find out what is going on in wrestling. Now though, he writes for the pop culture site (411mania.com), has his own blog (The Best of Chikara), and is the creator of the very site you are reading now.
